چکیده

As our society becomes more mobile and people reside farther away from their immediate families, competent decision-making has become critical for the older adults wishing to maintain their independence. However, very little is known about the relationship between residential choice and decision-making. Here we use the Balloon Analog Risk Task (BART) to examine risk-taking in two samples of older adults, one living in a retirement community and another living independently. We also used a cognitive model to gain insight into the cognitive factors underlying decision-making in these groups. We found that older adults living in a retirement community were more risk averse than their independent counterparts. Furthermore, this difference appeared to be motivated by group differences in initial perception of risk. This study suggests an intriguing difference between these two residential groups, and also points to the utility of using laboratory methods in research on real-world problems.

Commentary: Risky decision-making is associated with residential choice in healthy older adults

Citation: Petrova D and Garcia-Retamero R (2016) Commentary: Risky decision-making is associated with residential choice in healthy older adults. Seaman et al. (2015) compared 23 older adults living independently to 23 older adults living in a retirement community on their risky decision making. Results from the Balloon Analog Risk Task (BART; Lejuez et al., 2002) showed that older adults livin...

Editorial: The Aging Decision-Maker: Advances in Understanding the Impact of Cognitive Change on Decision-Making

Decision-making is a dynamic skill rather than a static capacity (Dhami et al., 2011), and so may alter on a developmental scale. A reduction in cognitive functioning has been linked to suboptimal decisions in older adults (Finucane et al., 2000). For example, declines in memory (Ratcliff et al., 1992), perceptual processing (Ratcliff et al., 2006), and inhibition (Williams et al., 1999) have b...

Decisions from Experience: Adaptive Information Search and Choice in Younger and Older Adults

In real-world decision making, choice outcomes, and their probabilities are often not known a priori but must be learned from experience. The dopamine hypothesis of cognitive aging predicts that component processes of experience-based decision making (information search and stimulus-reward association learning) decline with age. Many existing studies in this domain have used complex neuropsycho...

Neuroanatomy accounts for age-related changes in risk preferences

Many decisions involve uncertainty, or 'risk', regarding potential outcomes, and substantial empirical evidence has demonstrated that human aging is associated with diminished tolerance for risky rewards. Grey matter volume in a region of right posterior parietal cortex (rPPC) is predictive of preferences for risky rewards in young adults, with less grey matter volume indicating decreased toler...

Risky choice in younger versus older adults: Affective context matters

Earlier frameworks have indicated that older adults tend to experience decline in their deliberative decisional capacity, while their affective abilities tend to remain intact (Peters, Hess, Västfjäll, & Auman, 2007). The present study applied this framework to the study of risky decision-making across the lifespan. Two versions of the Columbia Card Task (CCT) were used to trigger either affect...
